small world
Almost made it through the day without a comment about something in my world being amiss...
I played golf with Dad this morning. We were paired with another two-some, a father and son. There was a cool breeze but no sun due to the cloud cover. I could have played better but did well enough to win $1.75 off my Dad. We had many bad breaks on the course. It is fun to know that I can still play well enough to impress strangers, the guys we were playing with now have a new appreciation of how well some women can play golf. It is also especially fun to know that as a 5'7", 140 lb young woman, I can out-play the biggest and burliest of men because I can finesse golf shots as opposed to 'gripping it and ripping it'. At any rate, I have seven new quarters added to the collection of golf winnings.
Dad and I caught a quick lunch after playing. We arrived on campus just in time for the meeting. Dad listened attentively. After two very dull hours, the meeting ended so we were able to run across campus to go find Mom. During the dash across campus we talked about the topics touched upon in the meeting. I was impressed to find out that Dad followed most of it. I think Dad was impressed that he followed most of it. He stopped asking about my work quite some time ago. I may never know why but I have speculated that it might be that he just doesn't care or that he didn't think he would understand or what... After wishing Mom a very brief Happy Birthday, I dropped Dad off with her, then ran back to the Physics building so I could get in an hour of work before running home to shower, change, and meet the family for dinner.
At dinner, we did the normal family conversation stuff of 'how was your day' and such before moving on a discussion of the news and any current car accidents. Growing up with both parents working in the private investigation industry meant that we talked about traffic accidents on a nightly basis. One particular accident struck the interest of the family, a man driving down the wrong side of a bridge who was killed when he struck another car and killed that passenger. I know, lovely conversation for the birthday celebration dinner. I'll come back to that accident later.
David's energy was starting to fade fast, so we proceeded on to my apartment for cake and presents. As I pulled into the apartment complex, my dad chastised me for the way I "throw" my car into park. So apparently I "THROW" my car into park and it makes funny grinding noises on the gears. I didn't hear the car make any funny noises, no one else heard the car make any funny noises. So now I have to learn how not to throw my car into park.
We did a very dorky rendition of 'happy birthday' with everyone's names included. And as I predicted, I have three fourths of a cake left. Maybe the boys in the lab will want some tomorrow. Present opening all around was fun. The most amusing part of the evening stemmed from the fact that Grandma made Mom and Dad bring the presents she was giving them over here to open them at the family gathering (even though she wasn't attending). Grandma is Dad's mom. Grandma gave Dad $20 and a Wal-Mart dollar bin DVD. Grandma gave Mom $100 in a pretty card. We all had a good laugh out of that. I ended up with some spending money, a couple of DVDs, a book, and magnet poetry.
They just left. I can finally breathe. I can start getting back to work tomorrow. I feel like I have missed an entire week of work just to get everything in place for this evening. I have so many other things that need attention now. I probably will not be seeing the light of day for a few days. I definitely will not have time to make it up to J-ville this weekend to see Amy. Maybe next weekend. Amy is talking about coming down this weekend. If she does, I might finally get my Christmas present from her, you never know.
Oh yes, getting back to the car accident. My friend Jessica called in the middle of cake with the family. She sounded upset but I couldn't talk to her with the entire family around. As soon as they left, I called her back. As it turns out, the guy that was driving on the wrong side of the road in that accident was her girlfriend's cousin. This cousin's Mom just died last week. Tough time for that family. Tough time for Jess and Jess's girlfriend.
No matter how much I may bitch and complain about the people in my life, I love them all dearly and hope that they are all safe.

happy birthday! sorry it's a little late.
i don't get it though, it seems a little bit freaky that you have the same birthday as both of your parents, did they plan when to have you?? something supernatural going on there? or is this some kind of family tradition to make things simpler???
Thank you for the birthday wishes. They are greatly appreciated. My parents and I do not share the exact same birthday, just close. My mom's birthday was last thursday, dad's was last friday, mine is today, and my sister's is this coming Friday. I have no idea if they tried to plan out the pregnancies. As far as I know, its just some freaky coincidence. We combined all of our birthdays into one celebration this year because it was going to be the only day that we were all going to be able to get together. I am off to go catch up on some reading, thanks again for your comment.
